Why 60% of Twitter Users Quit: Spam

topherchris:

NYMag.com

That’s Twitter: A tool to mass-blast the public with whatever message you choose, whether you’re promoting your book or yourself. This practice used to have a different name: spam. But “tweeting” sounds much more cuddly than, say, “shilling,” and Twitter’s a much cuter name than Wiki-spam.

Is twitter just an opt-in mailing list? I guess it depends on what content you signed up for. I think what is really hurting twitter right now is the large number of people using twitter simply to sell at people rather than have a conversation, which is what makes twitter useful.

Sure twitter is useful to marketers, but a majority of them just overload their “followers” with messages that are the equivalent of junk mail.

I’m puzzled by this. Is the issue that people feel the need to recipro-follow these webcocks? It’s early after a three-day weekend so I must be missing something here, but NYMag.com is making it sound like you just get all this crap you never signed up for. That simply isn’t true.

It’s very useful to marketers. But marketers aren’t useful to anybody. Unfollow. Done. Next.
