True.
I hear this all the time - that we are the best in the world. I do not support a single payer system, but I DO support some type of reform. There is no reason that we aren’t the best in every category.
There are many reasons why we aren’t the best in every category. It has to do with what motivates care in our system (money, not taking care of people), and the fact that we have unmitigated price gouging coming not only from the medical community and pharmaceutical industries, but also from the health insurance companies through which care is mediated. If you fail to acknowledge and address the reasons for the high prices and poorer quality results (the high infant mortality rate is a direct result of how we provide health care in this country—via insurance), then any reform ignoring those factors will be useless.
There are reasons. Reform must address them, not the ideals or imaginary concerns of people who are more committed to free markets or preserving the health insurance industry than fixing our broken system.
I agree with you… But I think that a free market can address this better than complete government control. I do not think that the US federal gov’t has shown a propensity toward effective management.
